So they say in the third trimester that you're supposed
to have all these super-weird hormone-induced dreams. Last night
I dreamed I was at Macy's, and they were having a 2-for-1 sale on
Clinique Black Honey lipstick.
And Aaron and I finalized our anniversary plans!
We're leaving early tomorrow morning for Big Sur, camping the first
night, then staying at the Ripplewood
Resort on Sunday night. Hopefully we will not be too freezing.
TUESDAY, October 28
Last night was pregnancy class #7, and the most
serious class so far. It was 2.75 hours of straight lecture on "out-of-hospital
birth" (i.e., what it's like to give birth at Sage Femme).
(The other 15 minutes was our snack + break.) As she was going over
the list of gear we're supposed to bring to the birth center, Judith
(our midwife) said, completely OUT OF THE BLUE, that she wanted
to make sure we all understood that it's "impossible"
to have a clean, dry birth. HUH?? I have to admit, I was secretly
assuming my own birth experience would be on the dry-ish side. In
fact, I'm still thinking that. "Impossible" seems like
pretty strong language.
Sometimes (especially in this
heat) I can't imagine what it's like NOT to be pregnant! But here's
a list of the things I'm most looking forward to after:
Sleeping on my stomach Eating sushi Not wearing the same pants everyday
I would put drinking caffeinated
beverages (like Vietnamese coffee) on the list, but I think I have
to wait until the baby is done breast-feeding. I guess I could put
alchoholic beverages down on the list too, but if I had to choose
between caffeinated and alchoholic drinks, I'd pick caffeinated
any day. Plus, I think I'm spelling alchoholic wrong.
MONDAY, October 27
So the pumpkin-carving party was fun, and the backyard
looked great, but nobody carved a pumpkin! What the heck? My sister
Kelly said the same thing happened at her pizza-and-pumpkin-carving
party. I guess pumpkin-carving is just something people like to
do on their own. But it was nice to see everybody; including people
we haven't seen in a long time-- like Dave and Melissa (congratulations
on your new status as home owners!), Reed and Matt, and even Emi
(who we usually see more often, esp. since she lives across the
street).
And, speaking of generous, check my parents out.
Aaron and I met them down in Cupertino on Sunday morning for my
brother's volleyball tournament, and they brought us an amazing
amount of food: a dozen Niman Ranch hot links, a huge bowl of macaroni
salad, paella, left-over punch bowl cake (it's a Southern version
of English trifle), a dozen pumpkin muffins, more Kozy Shack pudding,
AND a full-size Key Lime pie (the most popular item at the bbq).
I pretty much haven't had to cook at all this pregancy, which is
good news for me. Thank you mom and dad!!!
FRIDAY, October 24
I spoke too soon. We had to do downward-dog in yoga
today. Shoot!
Weekend highlights: my Aunt Nan is in town from
New Mexico, so we're having my family over for dinner tonight. Saturday,
I'm hoping to go camping as a run-through for our anniversary weekend
next weekend, and Sunday we're having a pumpkin-carving party in
the backyard. Everybody's invited! Just bring a pumpkin and a knife.
Ysidro from next door just predicted we're having
a boy. For the boy side now we've got my mom, Aaron's mom Chris,
Ysidro, May, and Janet. And in the girl's camp we've got my sister
Kelly, Aaron's sister Tina, this lady Luisa that we met at Lucca
Deli, and both grandmothers. (I may not have these exactly right.)
Who will be correct?
THURSDAY, October 23
For some reason I was completely drained of energy
today. But despite that I was able to trudge down to the post office
to mail off our thank-you cards. Thirty-five down; a half-dozen
left to go. Cha-ching!
And this afternoon I had my second official appointment
at Sage Femme Alternative Birth Center. I had to get a CBC (that's
a complete blood count, for the uninitiated) and a Rho-GAM
shot (brought to you by Johnson & Johnson). Crappy. Chelle (who
also has a negative blood-type) did some research and found out
Rhogam used to be made with LEFTOVER BLOOD PRODUCTS from other people.
SICK. Hopefully this is not true in the 21st Century.
Here's a photographic essay of my experience (if
you can't tell, those are Looney Tunes bandaids):
WEDNESDAY, October 22
Yoga was awesome this morning - one thing I especially
love about Jane's class: we never have to do evil downward-dog!
You're supposed to be a lot more flexible when you're pregnant (another
hormone thing, this time called "Relaxin"). Apparently,
this is the only horomone to pass me by.
After yoga I had lunch with Anh-Minh
at Tartine. (I got the last croque monsieur avec jambon - tres bon).
Anh-Minh has recently joined the ranks of the self-employed. However,
I'm pretty sure nobody will be as successful as Anh-Minh at being
self-employed. She's so talented, craft-y,
and most important of all, disciplined!
At night Aaron and I worked on our wedding thank-you
cards. We have just four days left to make it under the etiquette
deadline.
TUESDAY, October 21
Today I walked by Seth's old house. Namaste, Seth.
I hope you are enjoying Marfa.
MONDAY, October 20
It was a weekend full of fun and free family fare.
Chelle and Jim came down from Oregon late Thursday night, and then
we hung out all day Friday -- including trips to Natural
Resources and Sage Femme (where Chelle courageously looked through
their photo album of births). Kehau and Dennis hosted a barbeque
on Friday night with ribs and a dance movie -- starring Adam --
courtesy of Adam and (new Canadian boyfriend) Paul. Sunday morning
we went over to Aaron's grandmother's for breakfast and then we
had lunch with my sister Malika in Santa Cruz. Lots of fun meals
followed by a stop at Baskin Robbins for a buy-one-get-one free
ice cream cone (thanks to the Entertainment coupon book from Greg
and May).
Today my cousin Tobi was in town from New Mexico,
so we went over to visit my grandmother together. My grandmother
wants the baby to be a girl, but HATES the name Oliver ("Well,
I just don't understand that."). She declared that she's going
to call it "Tootsie Bell," no matter what. She didn't
seemed too thrilled with our leading candidate for a boy's name
either.
At night we went over to see Josh and Arela's new
dog, Fiona. It's 7 months old, super-cute, sweet-tempered and sort-of
floppy/slobbery.
WEDNESDAY, October 15
MELASMA ALERT!!! Yes, I have developed some hyper-pigmentation
at the base of my neck. It is dark brown, and looks a bit like dirt.
(I guess it's a side effect of the hormone "Blemishin."
Har, har.)
MONDAY, October 13
This weekend we went to Debbie Valentine's wedding at the Marin
Headlands Center. It was v. elegant -- dahlias everywhere, an open
cocktail bar (shoot!) and the cake was made of ice cream. Plus,
I got to see lots of friends from high school -- Donna Cafasso,
Rebecca and Darien, Eileen Wills, and of course Debbie herself,
who looked beautiful.
We spent the rest of the weekend in Marin. On Sunday,
Aaron filmed Deborah
Madison at the farmer's market for a pilot; and my mom took
me maternity clothes shopping (I'm set for the next ten weeks now).
Then we went to Costco where she bought me a Costco-sized Kozy Shack
rice pudding! Thank you mom!!
WEDNESDAY, October 15
It's perfect fall weather today - gorgeous. Mitchell's
has brought back pumpkin ice cream for the season - delicious. I'm
stuck inside transcribing for Clarity
Films - tedious. (At least it's
u.t.t.)
FRIDAY, October 10
Some days it's harder not to open that gender envelope
than others.
FRIDAY, October 3
Well, this is it -- the official beginning of the
third trimester. And, according to Aaron's Expectant
Father book (thanks Chelle and Angie), the period when I will
gain the most weight -- at least eleven pounds.
My first pair of official pregnancy pants! The pouch
just keeps on going all the way up to your ribs, Cary Grant style.
It sounds weird, but it's actually strangely comfortable. Here's
a flash presentation, courtesy of Aaron:
WEDNESDAY, October 1
I'm back in Yoga action today! It turns out Jane
was on vacation last week, so after trying out the substitute teacher's
class, I took the week off too. The substitute-teacher class was
just too mellow - she kept saying stuff like, "Now let's try
this pose - but only if you feel like it." Hello?? I can relax
at home for free -- I'm here to work on squats!
As for Healthy Pregnancy class #4, we talked
about the stages of labor, emotional signposts of labor (from "Oh
my god -- the baby's coming!" to "I can't do this anymore."),
and our fears around labor - pain, the baby's health, the mother's
health, etc..
